Our Latest Campaign involves Fundraising for restoration of the iconic (and unique) Dunure Harbour Lighthouse; most famous for its pivotal role in the rescue of the men aboard the "Valkyrien" on 11 December 1883. The Valkyrien was a 381-tonne Danish sailing barque bound for Glasgow from Virginia. She was caught in hurricane-force winds in the Clyde Estuary. Her sails were torn-away and she drifted aimlessly. She dropped her anchor but the cable snapped. She called for a Pilot but it could not reach her. She was eventually wrecked on reefs. Despite horrendous weather conditions, and against terrible odds, the fishermen of Dunure rallied to rescue all but one of the sailors, guided by the flame from the Lighthouse which has guarded the Harbour for over 200-years. One of the sailors rescued that night was Captain Peter Maersk Moller (Born 1836 - Died 1927), father of Arnold Peter Moller, founder of the "Maersk Corporation", the largest shipping-container company in the World. Dunure Community Council is working closely with other interested Groups to secure Funding in the order of £100,000 to undertake extensive repair and refurbishment of the Lighthouse - before it deteriorates to an unsafe condition which will require demolition.
